What is IV sedation and how is it different from nitrous oxide?

Both IV sedation and nitrous oxide (commonly known as 'happy gas') help patients feel more relaxed during dental treatment, but they work in different ways and may be suitable for different procedures or individual needs.

What's the Difference between Nitrous Oxide and IV Sedation?

Nitrous Oxide — Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a small mask placed over your nose. It promotes relaxation while allowing you to remain awake and responsive throughout your appointment. Once the gas is stopped and oxygen is administered, the effects usually wear off quickly.

IV Sedation — IV sedation is administered through a small cannula placed into a vein, allowing sedative medication to enter your bloodstream. While you remain conscious and can respond to instructions, you are likely to feel deeply relaxed and may remember very little about the procedure afterwards. Because the effects of IV sedation take longer to wear off, you will need someone to drive you home and stay with you for a period after your appointment.
